DTA-8209-03-18: The View from Here

The View from Here course was designed to help nurses and other health professionals develop the knowledge and practice skills they need to care for people with dementia in hospitals.

The course is visual and interactive comprising nine topics that take approximately 30 minutes each to work through. Content includes video case studies illustrating interactions, assessments and strategies with links and downloads of tools and other resources. The topics include:

  • Topic 1 – Neuropathology
  • Topic 2 – Delirium and delirium superimposed on dementia
  • Topic 3 – Person Centred care and Theoretical models
  • Topic 4 – Communication Strategies
  • Topic 5 – Information Gathering and Bedside Tests
  • Topic 6 – Approaches to Pain Assessment
  • Topic 7 – Activities for the Acute Care Setting
  • Topic 8 –The Environment: Sensory, Physical, Social
  • Topic 9 – Care planning and interventions

Called The View from Here, the program encourages health professionals to understand the acute care experience from the viewpoint of a person who has dementia.  Putting the patient’s perspective foremost in the modules underpins learning and supports a person centred approach to care.

The View from Here has been reviewed by clinicians and academics with expertise in dementia care in acute care settings, delirium management and learning design.

A Completion Certificate for CPD credit is awarded on successful completion of all nine topics, including assessments.

This course is estimated to take 4 to 5 hours to complete.

Learning Outcomes

Topic 1 - Neuropathology - Key Learning Outcomes:
  • Understand the neuropsychological basis for BPSD
  • Identify how dementia-related damage to cortical structures may impact patient behaviour
Topic 2 - Delirium and delirium superimposed on dementia - Key Learning Outcomes:
  • Describe key features of delirium
  • Differentiate between symptoms of delirium and dementia
  • Describe how symptoms of delirium may overlay those of dementia in cases of delirium superimposed on dementia
Topic 3 - Person Centred care and Theoretical models  - Key Learning Outcomes:
  • Describe person-centred care (PCC)
  • Recognise that applying the principles of PCC can improve the quality of care for people with dementia
  • Describe a number of models and frameworks that can provide structure to assessing and planning person-centred care for people with dementia
  • Apply simple strategies that support a person-centred approach
Topic 4 - Communication Strategies - Key Learning Outcomes:
  • Understand the impact of dementia on communication
  • Identify and implement communication strategies which can be used to facilitate communication
  • Reflect on your communication style and rehearse modifications to verbal communication which may enhance understanding for the person with dementia
Topic 5 - Information Gathering - Key Learning Outcomes:
  • Recognise that information gathering is related to successful care of the patient with dementia and management of their behavioural symptoms
  • Identify and use informal tools for information gathering about the patient’s personal history and current functional status
  • Administer at least three bedside tests
  • Identify how you would include information from bedside tests in patient progress notes
Topic 6 - Pain - Key Learning Outcomes:
  • Identify the various mechanisms by which pain can be expressed, and the hierarchy of pain assessment
  • Recognise that regular pain assessment is vital to the management of BPSD
  • Use formal tools to identify and record pain levels
Topic 7 - Activity - Key Learning Outcomes:
  • Identify meaningful activities for a person with dementia
  • Outline how the Need-driven Dementia-compromised Behaviour model (NDB) can be used to derive effective activity prescription
  • Recognise that recreational and social activity is an efficient strategy to reduce anxiety and enhance mood and well-being for some people with dementia
  • Identify some activity resources appropriate to the hospital setting
Topic 8 - Environment: Sensory, Physical, Social - Key Learning Outcomes:
  • Identify both psychosocial and physical factors in the environment that may impact on the person with dementia
  • Apply 10 evidenced-based principles of environmental design to identify aspects of your ward which could be changed to improve the quality of care for people with dementia
Topic 9 -  Care planning and interventions  - Key Learning Outcomes:
  • Identify tools to observe, assess and document function and behaviour in the acute care setting over time
  • Understand where to access the latest evidence in relation to use of antipsychotic medication for people with dementia

Professional Value

You must complete each module and a final course quiz (obtaining a pass of 75%) before you will be able to access a short evaluation and print a certificate of completion. You may be able to use the certificate as acknowledgement for Continuous Professional Development.

All of DTA’s online courses are free.

Dementia Training Australia is supported by funding from the Australian Government under the Dementia and Aged Care Services fund.

To enrol in a course, you must first sign up for a DTA account.

Once you’re logged into your DTA Profile, you can enrol into a course.

  1. Browse the available courses
  2. Click the grey Register button
  3. Complete the requested fields e.g. Which of the following reasons best describe why you engaged with this DTA training option?
  4. Click button Request a Booking for this Course
  5. You will then receive an automated confirmation email and the course/s will show as pending in your DTA Profile.
  6. The day prior to your course start date, your registration will be approved, and an email sent to you containing the entry link to your course/s.

Certificates do not become available until the after the completion date of the course, and once DTA’s eLearning coordinator has reviewed the completed coursework.

If you finish the course before the end date, a completion link will be emailed to you (once the course has ended and been reviewed by our eLearning coordinator).

After this time, Certificate(s) will be available in your DTA Profile, and accessed/printed as needed.

You are welcome to take DTA courses if you live outside of Australia, however if learner quota is near full then preference will be given to Australian enrolments.
